Google has just released the information regarding the Android OS version distribution for the 2-week period, ending on 1st September. The numbers show that there is no change in the tendency in increasing the number of devices, running Android 2.1 and 2.2.

The graph shows that more than 70% of all android devices, which had accessed the Android Market during the second half of August are running on Android 2.1 or 2.2.  On the other hand the number of devices which are still running Android 1.5 and 1.6 is decreasing, having a combined share of almost 30%. This is quite a big number, considering that 1.5 and 1.6 have a lot of bugs, consume more power and they are not as fast as 2.1 and 2.2.

But after all the fragmentation in Android OS versions is quite good and it is getting better with every new update to the older devices. The picture for iOS on the other hand is not pink. The fragmentation there is worse than Android’s, having almost an equal share of each iOS versions – from the oldest ones to the newest ones. It seems that the news around Apple and iOS lately is always bad, including it’s market share, that being devoured by Android.
